About Us
Basaltic Farms of McArthur is the newest addition to our growing network of local producers. Located just under 100 miles from the Modoc Harvest office in Cedarville (the radius that the Hub initially defined as "local"), Gene Schallert and his crew share our passion for thriving soil and nutrient-dense food. After a prolific year of primarily online garlic sales, the folks at Basaltic are excited to connect with local customers. We offer quality certified organic garlic and garlic scapes (limited seasonal availability). Around mid April to early June scapes are available depending on the years weather and growing conditions. We look forward to providing delicious garlic to our local Intermountain neighbors.
Practices
We believe in the benefits of cover cropping for our soil health. We practice crop rotation and do not have alliums on the same field for 4 years to prevent disease. After harvesting we immediately prepare our field for seeding with various cover crops. We use soil tests to determine what nutrients are lacking from our fields and plant the appropriate cover crops to replenish what is lacking while also providing flowering varieties like mustard and buckwheat for native pollinators as well as our colonies of honey bees. Our typical mix of cover consists of barley, rye grass, yellow mustard, cover, buckwheat, turnips and more.

We foliar feed our garlic throughout the season with certified organic fish emulsion and later on seaweed extract to encourage bulb development.
